Bangladesh slips a notch on corruption perceptions index

Bangladesh has gone down one step in global corruption perception index (CPI) 2021 and secured the 147th position globally.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) made the disclosure at a virtual press briefing on Tuesday.

The country’s position was 146th in 2020 from the top.

 

Counting from below, Bangladesh has been ranked 13th in the latest global CPI, which is one step higher than that recorded in 2020.

Bangladesh has scored 26 points out of 100. The score remains the same as 2020, 2019, and 2018, the report said.

In South Asia, Bangladesh remains 2nd lowest both in score and rank – better than only Afghanistan which has scored 16 and ranked 174th from top, while Bhutan both scores and ranks the best –68 and 25th from top respectively.

Bangladesh’s ranking is the 3rd lowest in Asia-Pacific, better than only Cambodia followed jointly by Afghanistan and North Korea.

The Transparency International index, which ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and businesspeople, uses a scale of 0-100 – where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is clean.
